September comics / Cómics de setiembre

A couple of days after moving to my new apartment here in Davis, I was welcomed with a box of comics, and unlike previous months, this time the box wasn’t half empty, it was full! I was so happy to get the deluxe hardcover edition of John Byrne’s Superman: the Man of Steel vol. 1! The Boys Dear Becky and Strange Adventures continue to amaze me, the Legion of Super-Heroes was good too, however my favorite comic of the month was X-Men: Marvels Snapshots! And once again this year the best FCBD book was the aptly titled Best of 2000AD! And now without further ado here are September comics as per solicitations:

BOOKS OF MAGIC #1
(W) Kat Howard (A) Tom Fowler (CA) Kai Carpenter. From the SANDMAN UNIVERSE #1, it's the return of Neil Gaiman's magical morality fable in an all-new series written by Kat Howard (Roses and Rot, An Unkindness of Magicians) and drawn by Tom Fowler (DOOM PATROL)! Timothy Hunter may be destined tobecome the most powerful magician in the universe, but he's still a London teenager, and having magical abilities complicates things more than it helps. It's not like he can use magic to pass his exams, stop being bullied or convince his cute friend to date him. And while Tim's trying to live his life, there are cultists who want to kill him, believing his power will eventually corrupt him into becoming a merciless mage. Oh, and those are the good guys. Luckily, his new substitute teacher is more than she appears, and may be able to help Tim discover the mystery behind the Books of Magic…

BOOKS OF MAGIC #2
(W) Kat Howard (A) Tom Fowler (CA) Kai Carpenter. Tim embraces his access to magic, trying to do as much as he can as quickly as his power will let him. Overwhelmed by enthusiasm and impatience, he ignores Dr. Rose's warnings and fails to consider the consequences of his actions. And they could be dire.

BORDER TOWN #2
(W) Eric M Esquivel (A/CA) Ramon Villalobos. After barely surviving a supernatural showdown at Jack in the Box, the kids regroup over nachos to debate what to do when your town is overrun by monsters of myth. Frank's freaked and wants to go to the cops! Julietta can't because her family's undocumented. Aimi wants to know the secrets of the underworld! And Quinteh might just be hungry. Meanwhile, El Chupacabra crosses the border between worlds, bringing with him an unspeakably terrifying force to Devil's Fork.

BORDER TOWN #4
(W) Eric M Esquivel (A/CA) Ramon Villalobos. Racist high school bully Blake has become that which he hates the most: a figure of Mexican legend! Transformed into a walking, talking Día de los Muertos skeleton, Blake's possessed by the spirit of Santa Muerte herself, who compels the tortured young man to undertake a most dangerous mission: open the border between worlds-permanently.

BOYS DEAR BECKY #4
(W) Garth Ennis (A) Russell Braun (CA) Darick Robertson. Butcher risks a collision course with Mallory, as he exploits a voice on the inside of Vought's latest superhero operation. But his memories of Becky make the dangerous game he's playing all the more difficult. Hughie, meanwhile, is pushing his luck in another way entirely…

CAPTAIN AMERICA #1
(W) Ta-Nehisi Coates (A) Leinil Francis Yu (CA) Alex Ross. IT IS WINTER IN AMERICA. For over 70 years, he has stood in stalwart defense of our country and its people. But in the aftermath of Hydra's takeover of the nation, Captain America is a figure of controversy, carrying a tarnished shield…and a new enemy is rising! Who are the Power Elite? And how do they intend to co-opt and corrupt the symbol that is Captain America? Rated T+

DOCTOR DOOM #1
(W) Christopher Cantwell (A) Salvador Larroca (CA) Aco. THE CRACK OF DOOM! From Christopher Cantwell (HALT AND CATCH FIRE, SHE COULD FLY) comes a new monthly ongoing series… Victor Von Doom - scientist, sorcerer, disfigured face, twisted soul - has been spending much of his time warning against a trillion-dollar global effort to create the first 'artificial' black hole. Wrestling with visions of an entirely different life…a better future…DOCTOR DOOM finds himself at a crossroads. (what is he questioning?) A catastrophic act of terrorism kills thousands, and the prime suspect is… DOOM? Victor will have to push his unexplained thoughts aside and focus on remaining alive as the title of 'Most Wanted Man' is thrust upon him…. Left with no homeland, no armies, no allies, indeed, nothing at all, will the reign of Doctor Doom come to an abrupt halt? Rated T

STRANGE ADVENTURES #5
(W) TOM KING (A) MITCH GERADS and EVAN “DOC” SHANER (CA) MITCH GERADS. Mr. Terrific is back on Earth, and he’s making things hot for Adam Strange—but he also might get a little burned himself! The conflict is out in the open now, and the court of public opinion doesn’t play fair. Mr. Terrific was picked to investigate the accusations against Adam Strange because he was the most impartial member of the Justice League—but can even he keep all of this from getting personal? Plus, as we witness more of Adam’s adventures in outer space, will his version of events jibe with the facts, or will they continue to drift further apart? Find out in the series everyone is talking about by one of the most acclaimed creative teams in comics!

SUPERMAN THE MAN OF STEEL HC VOL 01
Following Crisis on Infinite Earths, comic book superstar John Byrne reimagined Superman for a new era in bold tales presented in this new collection! Starting with the six-issue Man of Steel miniseries, Byrne fundamentally changed Superman's origins and propelled him into the present, including iconic encounters with Lex Luthor, Metallo, and Darkseid! This title collects The Man of Steel #1-6, Superman #1-4, Adventures of Superman #424-428, and Action Comics #584-587.

X-MEN MARVELS SNAPSHOT #1
The Marvels Snapshot tour through Marvel history continues, showcasing Marvel's greatest characters through the eyes of ordinary people! Or does it? In this case, the 'ordinary person' is teenaged Scott Summers, witnessing the dawn of the Marvel Age from a Nebraska orphanage and wondering what his place in it might be. What was it like to experience the debut of the FF, the Hulk, Iron Man and more? To wish you could be a part of it all? Writer Jay Edidin (Thor: Metal Gods, Jay & Miles X-Plain the X-Men) makes his Marvel comics debut, teamed with Tom Reilly (Immortal Hulk), to tell a story of upheaval and decision that would shape the X-Men (and the Marvel Universe) forever after.

BOOKS OF MAGIC #1

BOOKS OF MAGIC #2

FCBD 2020 BEST OF 2000 AD #0

FCBD 2020 ENTER THE INCAL #1

FUTURE FOUNDATION #1

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #8

SUPERMAN THE MAN OF STEEL HC VOL 01
Este título recoge The Man of Steel # 1-6, Superman # 1-4, Adventures of Superman # 424-428 y Action Comics # 584-587.

X-MEN MARVELS SNAPSHOT #1

May Comics / cómics de mayo

I guess, one way or another, we all celebrated Free Comic Book Day in May. However, unlike previous years, instead of my usual 5 FCBD books I only got 2 (shame on you, DCBS!). I got Archie, which was surprisingly good and 2000AD, which was extraordinary (I absolutely loved it). Marvel continues to do an outstanding job with monthly series like Silver Surfer and International Iron Man (I didn’t think I could enjoy Bendis and Maleev’s title so much). Of course, nothing could be better than the Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 1, almost 1000 pages of classic X-Men stories, mostly illustrated by John Byrne, one of my all-time favorite artists and the reason why I decided to get this gigantic book. Speaking of reprints, Gaiman and Zulli’s The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch was also wonderful. Strange Fruit continues to be one of the best miniseries (and J.G. Jones art is top notch). Finally, there were two very interesting new series in May: the first issue of Renato Jones was aesthetically delightful but the best comic of the month would be Cinema Purgatorio #1, an impressive anthology that reunites authors such as Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Kieron Gillen, Gabriel Andrade, Kevin O’Neil, Ignacio Calero, etc. And now, without further ado, here are May comics as per solicitations:

CINEMA PURGATORIO #1

Anthology has become a dirty word, so far be it from us to clean it up. Instead we'll shine our light onto the cutting edge of sequential art, with black and white artwork to allow illustrator's pure visions, and the greatest assembly of writing talent ever gathered on one series. Every issue is perfect-bound, with no ads, and all of the works are very long-form, there are no collections planned before 2018. Jump in now and embrace the new future of comics. The one of which Alan Moore has always dreamed. It's here, now. Hiding in the dark corner. Welcome to Cinema Purgatorio.

In collaboration with artists Dave Cockrum and John Byrne, Claremont crafted a run still heralded as a definitive era on the book. Hablando de reimpresiones, "The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch" de Gaiman y Zulli fue también maravilloso.

Bienvenido a Cinema Purgatorio.

EMPRESS #2

FACTS IN THE CASE OF THE DEPARTURE OF MISS FINCH HC

FCBD 2016 ARCHIE #1

INTERNATIONAL IRON MAN #3

JUDGE DREDD #1 IDW'S GREATEST HITS

RENATO JONES: THE ONE% #1

THE UNCANNY X-MEN OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC
(W) Chris Claremont, Len Wein (A) John Byrne, Dave Cockrum (CA) Dave Cockrum, Gil Kane. Incluye X-MEN # 94-131 y ANNUAL # 3, y GIANT-SIZE X-MEN # 1.

May comic books / cómics de mayo

May is always one of my favorite months, and I think it is because I get free comics. I’m talking, of course, about Free Comic Book Day, and now, for third year in a row, my favorite was 2000AD, with 48 thrilling pages plus free digital comics, this certainly has been the most generous offering of the season. Another great FCBD title was Mercury Heat, I’ll certainly be reading the next issue in a month or so. And I loved Alex Ross cover for Secret Wars! Jupiter’s Circle continues to impress me, but perhaps the biggest surprise this time was All-New X-Men #40, an issue that made it into the headlines of every comic news website, the reason? Bobby Drake, AKA Iceman, founding member of the X-Men, admits that he’s gay, we owe this wonderful coming-out-of-the-closet issue to Brian Michael Bendis. Finally, the best issue of the month was Alan Moore’s Providence. And now, without further ado, here are May comics as per solicitations:

ALL-NEW X-MEN #40
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) MAHMUD ASRAR (A) ANDREA SORRENTINO (CA) Who are the Utopians? And what secret do they hold that pertains to the future of mutantkind? The All-New X-Men may regret finding out!

CHRONONAUTS #3 (MR)
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) Sean Murphy. From ancient Rome to the roaring twenties to the 1980s music scene, Corbin and Danny-the world's first time travelers-continue to wreak havoc with the time-stream, and get into more hijinks with some of history's most notorious figures! And it's all happening while the world-and their bosses-are watching!

FCBD 2015 SECRET WARS #1

When the director of the FBI threatens to reveal his secret, Richard is forced to make an impossible decision, all while his team battles to keep the world safe.

PROVIDENCE #1 (of 12) (MR)
(W) Alan Moore (A/CA) Jacen Burrows. The most important work of 2015 begins here with the long-awaited arrival of Alan Moore's breathtaking epic PROVIDENCE with his artistic partner Jacen Burrows. In his most carefully considered work in decades, Moore deconstructs all of Lovecraft's concepts, reinventing the entirety of his work inside a painstakingly researched framework of American history. Both sequel and prequel to NEONOMICON, PROVIDENCE begins in 1919 and blends the mythical visions of HPL flawlessly into the cauldron of racial and sexual intolerance that defined that era on the East Coast of America. Every line from artist Jacen Burrows is perfectly honed to complete this immersive experience. The result is a breathtaking masterpiece of sequential art that will define modern horror for this generation. Invoking a comparison it to a prior literary masterpiece is not something to be handled lightly, but in scope, importance and execution: Providence is the Watchmen of horror. Moore has designed every cover, every single page, and every nuance of this work to create his most fully-realized vision to date. There are no ads, all 32 pages are written by Moore, and Jacen Burrows has spent the past two years slaving over the finest detail possible on the pages. The entire work is already written, intricately crafted to tie the most nuanced threads together over the breadth of the series. Painstakingly researched, meticulously produced, this is a sequential masterpiece that will serve as important a call to the next generation of comic book writers as Watchmen did 30 years ago: this is a definitive demonstration of just how good a comic book can be. Available with Regular, Pantheon, Portrait, Dreamscape Wraparound, Women of HPL, and a special Ancient Tome Incentive cover, all by collaborator Jacen Burrows.

SANDMAN OVERTURE #5 (MR)

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #10 (MR)
(W) Kieron Gillen (A/CA) Jamie McKelvie, Matthew Wilson. Ragnarock is finally here. The show to end all shows promises to be a lovely experience for all the gods... wait. Oh noes! Jamie and Matt have drawn Baphomet drenched in blood on the cover. What a hilarious internal communication error. I'm sure it's a mistake and nothing to do with the story whatsoever.

ALL-NEW X-MEN #40
¿Quiénes son los Utópicos? ¿Y cuál es su secreto?

CHRONONAUTS #3 (MR)

FCBD 2015 2000 AD SPECIAL

FCBD 2015 LADY JUSTICE
El clásico perdido de Neil Gaiman.

FCBD 2015 LEGENDARY COMICS SAMPLER
ANNIHILATOR, EPOCHALYPSE, A TOWN CALLED DRAGON, THE HARVESTER, THE TOWER CHRONICLES: DREADSTALKER y más obras de Grant Morrison, Frazer Irving, Matt Wagner, Simon Bisley, Judd Winick, etc.

FCBD 2015 MERCURY HEAT DEBUT (MR)

my drawing (color version) / mi dibujo (versión a color)

PROVIDENCE #1 (of 12) (MR)

STAR WARS #4

STAR WARS #5

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #10

May comic books / cómics de mayo

It happens every year. My favorite FCBD book comes from Rebellion: it’s 2000AD. Am I losing impartiality? Is it because I grew up reading old 2000AD progs? I don’t know, the thing is that 2000AD FCBD 2014 was the best of the bunch. Epic (from Comix Tribe), however, was surprisingly good. May has also been a month for back issues, a chance to catch up on some of the All New Marvel Now series (the best has been Loki Agent of Asgard # 1, what an unforgettable first issue!). Certainly, Jason Aaron continues to surprise me with some of the best comics I've read lately: Thor God of Thunder and Wolverine & the X-Men. Both brilliant! Of  course, Miracleman continues to amaze me, and Mark Millar’s universe is still the best place to go. Starlight was terrific but if I had to choose my favorite comic book of the month the award would be a tie between MPH # 1 and 2000AD. A veritable British thrills overload! And now, without further ado, here are May comic books as per solicitations:

Ciertamente Jason Aaron continúa sorprendiéndome con algunos de los mejores cómics que he leído últimamente: "Thor God of Thunder" y "Wolverine & the X-Men". ¡Ambos brillantes!
