December films / películas de diciembre

Happy New Year! Let’s celebrate the beginning of 2024 combining December films with the Best of 2023 List. I’ll start with one of my favorite productions of the year: written and directed by Emerald Fennell, Saltburn (2023) is a film that some might find disturbing and others quite fascinating. Barry Keoghan (The Killing of a Sacred Deer) is an unpopular student at Oxford University, where he meets Jacob Elordi (Euphoria), a wealthy, charismatic and handsome student admired by everyone. An unlikely friendship develops between the two young men, and soon the rich kid invites the other one to his summer palace, accompanied by the parents, Lord Richard E. Grant and wife Rosamund Pike (Hostiles), and some extravagant family friends such as Carey Mulligan. One of the most controversial scenes of the film takes place during this summer vacation, as Barry Keoghan secretly watches how Jacob Elordi masturbates and, when no one else is around, avidly drinks his friend’s semen. The protagonist infatuation with his friend goes beyond mere sexual desire, as it encompasses a need to not just fit in but also to acquire that which has never been a part of his life: maximum opulence, tradition and prestige of royalty. However, when the main character’s obsession with his friend starts creating problems, he’s quickly expelled from paradise and asked to leave the premises. What follows next is the protagonist’s twisted and cruel plan to regain control over his fate. Fennell creates complex and manipulative characters, which on the surface seem to live hedonistic lives but that, deep down, carry a lot of repressed traumas. A unique atmosphere full of intensity and energy, plus top-notch performances and a clever script turn this into a must-see.

Ridley Scott’s Napoleon (2023) is an impressive historical film about one of the most famous military figures in the world: Napoleon Bonaparte, magnificently played by Joaquin Phoenix (Joker). We see the early days of Napoleon and how he quickly rises in rank, until he becomes the most powerful man in France. He falls madly in love with Josephine Bonaparte, exquisitely played by Vanessa Kirby (The Crown), but while he’s busy with military campaigns trying to conquer the world, his wife is having sex with other men. We get to see the man behind the myth, and thanks to Scott’s strengths as a storyteller we can equally admire Napoleon’s brilliant strategies and courage in battle while we are surprised by how easily he’s deceived by other people, such as the Tsar Alexander, amazingly played by Edouard Philipponnat. With breathtaking scenarios and exotic locations, this never-ending war has two difficult moments, the unsuccessful incursion in Russia and the defeat at the hands of the Duke of Wellington, superbly played by Rupert Everett, in the battle of Waterloo. Scott summarizes Napoleon’s life in 2 hours and 40 minutes, and he also manages to create interesting and even contradictory characters, which makes everything feel even more real. Definitely one of the best films of 2023.

Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind (2023) takes place in a coastal town in Boston. Ben Foster is a fisherman without much of a future who welcomes his half-brother Toby Wallace, recent college grad, into his team of fishermen. However, after breaking the rules and receiving a steep fine, they must find a way to save their boat. Wallace’s girlfriend is Jenna Ortega, and she suggests the possibility of smuggling heroine to make enough money to pay the fine, but that plan actually makes things even worse. At its core, Finestkind is a story about brotherhood and the strong bonds within family, but it’s also an example of how quicky things can fall apart after one simple mistake. Tommy Lee Jones (The Family) is Foster’s father and his performance is brilliant. I’ll avoid spoilers but I’ll just say that the last scenes with Tommy Lee Jones are the best part of Finestkind and a good way of wrapping up the plot.

I loved the initial concept of Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City (2023). Bryan Cranston (All the Way) is the narrator who tells us about the life of playwright Edward Norton (Fight Club) who has a secret homosexual affair with his main actor. In the first narrative level we’re made aware that everything revolves around theater, in the second narrative level we get to see what happens behind the scenes while in the third narrative level we get to enjoy the actual theater play. Jason Schwartzman (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) is a man mourning the death of his wife, Margot Robbie (Barbie), willing to leave his children under the care of his father-in-law, Tom Hanks (A Man Called Otto). However, while stranded in Asteroid City, the protagonist meets and falls in love with theater actress Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow); everything seems to be fine, until the town receives the unexpected visit of an alien, fantastically played by Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic World Dominion). There are some good scenes and funny sequences, but I expected more from Wes Anderson. As usual, the cast includes a veritable legion of famous actors, such as Jeffrey Wright (The French Dispatch), Liev Schreiber, Steve Carell (Beautiful Boy), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) and Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth).

Emerald Fennell writes and directs Promising Young Woman (2020), a remarkable opera prima from a very talented filmmaker. Carey Mulligan (Shame) is a woman in her early 30s who is still living with her parents after dropping out from med school. No one seems to understand why she seems devoid of hope and plans for her future, but what nobody knows is that she has a secret life. At night, she goes to bars and night clubs and pretends to be completely drunk, an easy target for men who take her home believing they’ll easily have sex with her while she’s unconscious, men like Adam Brody (The OC) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Kick-Ass 2), who seem nice but who are, in essence, ready to rape her. It will be a shocking surprise for them when the woman who seemed to be so drunk she could barely walk is, in fact, totally sober and simply waiting for the right time to act. Fennell creates a character who has been through so much pain and trauma that seems unable to have a normal life, incapable of maintaining a relationship with Bo Burnham, her only love interest, or incapable of communicating with her mother, Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus); and yet, in an instant we identify with her quest for justice, and her intricate plan to confront those who committed heinous crimes of sexual abuse back when she was a student, as well as those who were accomplices. Fennell creates a compelling, brutally intense and yet realistic portrayal of what vengeance might look like without resorting to guns, torture or physical strength, after all, as the director expressed, in real life a woman can’t physically overpower abusive men, but she can definitely outthink them. Promising Young Woman is full of suspense and emotional pain; by far one of the best films from 2020.

Many critics have compared Saltburn with Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith. I can definitely see the similarities. Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) is a smart and talented young man who has the uncanny ability to impersonate other people. Thanks to that, he’s sent to Italy to retrieve Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), the son and only heir of an American millionaire. In Italy, the protagonist pretends to be a Princeton student and soon befriends the rich kid, who is always interested in making new friends. As I wrote before, “Jude Law is the golden boy everybody loves, and that includes not only Gwyneth Paltrow (Hard Eight) and Phillip Seymour Hoffman but also the protagonist. Matt Damon quickly falls in love with this lighthearted guy, but jealousy and resentment will force him to commit a terrible crime”. The two young men spend an awful amount of time together and become intimate friends, to the point that the protagonist makes the mistake of thinking he can seduce his friend. A filmic masterpiece, The Talented Mr. Ripley explores the darkest corners of the human mind, while emphasizing the real danger of unbridled greediness and a desperate need for fitting in. Nightmarish in some ways, haunting and painfully beautiful in others, Minghella’s film is an unforgettable cautionary tale about the peril of sacrificing our true identity to become something we’re not.

Time’s but a veiled screen, whereon our silhouettes fatten then grow lean. Another year has come and gone in this on-line journal and that indubitably calls forth a proper measure of our cinematographic experiences. Now let us be about our grudging rounds. Speak well, oh reader, and listen even better, for we have enough wit yet left to surprise thee. It is proposed we should find positions for all motion pictures presented in the course of 2023, and with an agile mind and knowledge both of directors and actors, we trust thou shalt count our judgment amongst the very best. Thus must we testify... sufficient in our intimate thoughts that these estimations spilled delinquent out of our mouths are indeed of the noblest disposition.

Como es habitual, el reparto incluye una auténtica legión de actores famosos, como Jeffrey Wright (The French Dispatch), Liev Schreiber, Steve Carell (Beautiful Boy), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) y Willem Dafoe (4:44 Last Day on Earth).

In January I had the chance to find a great selection of 2021 productions, starting with my favorite of the bunch È stata la mano di Dio (2021), a fascinating biographic, coming of age tale by renowned Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino. Filippo Scotti is a teenager obsessed with soccer and the possible arrival of Maradona to Naples in the 80s, at the same time, however, his interest in the opposite sex increases considerably, especially when his rather liberal and exhibitionist aunt Luisa Ranieri is around. The protagonist’s family is an unpredictable combination of extravagant men and women, and every time there is a family meeting then incredibly awkward and hilarious situations ensue. Of course, not everything is happiness, and sometimes family can also be the source of untold pain and secrets that might forever ruin what seemed to be perpetual relationships. The parents of the protagonist are Toni Servillo (La grande bellezza) and Teresa Saponangelo, absolutely delightful and charming characters. Based on Sorrentino’s life, the film shows us a family tragedy that strikes unexpectedly and the once carefree teenager must suddenly come to terms with true loss and figure out what to do with his life. È stata la mano di Dio is a breathtakingly beautiful film, brimming with life and wonderful scenes, full of joy and sorrow; it balances the sweetness of melancholy with the strength of eroticism, and real life events with the magic of a narrator who has the luxury of having survived such difficult moments, all that in addition to absolutely unforgettable characters. Sorrentino had already produced remarkable films in the past such as Youth, but this one is his magnum opus, a brilliant masterpiece that deserves all our admiration.

Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel (2021) is a captivating historic film that takes place in 14th century France. Matt Damon (Elysium) is a man who, thanks to his prowess in battle, soon gains the title of knight, while Adam Driver (The Dead Don’t Die) is his friend, a conniving squire who is plotting against others to gain the favor of count Ben Affleck (The Way Back). The knight marries Jodie Comer, the daughter of a disgraced noble man, and he tries to preserve his friendship with the squire to no avail. In this context, the squire comes up with a plan to secretly enter the knight’s castle and rape his wife. What follows is a very interesting game of perspectives, as we see the whole story being told from the point of view of the three different characters, each narration complementing the previous one and adding valuable details. At the time, women had basically no rights, but medieval law said that women were the property of their husbands, and therefore, after a violent encounter, there was a legal basis to sue the attacker for damaging the property of the husband. What follows is an audience with the king of France, Alex Lawther, which ends in France’s last trial by combat. Ridley Scott is always an amazing director and here he gives us a film with phenomenal battle sequences and very intense and shocking moments, such as the moment of the rape, while creating complex characters and telling a very dramatic story.

For almost 20 years, fans have been waiting for a sequel to the famous Matrix trilogy and now Lana Wachowski returns to the franchise with The Matrix: Resurrections (2021). Keanu Reeves works making videogames, and after 20 years Jonathan Groff, his boss (and future agent Smith) is forcing him to come up with a sequel for his super successful Matrix game. There is an interesting metafiction and self-referential approach here, and of course it was great to see Carrie-Anne Moss again, in this universe a married woman with children. Although they have no memory of their past as Neo and Trinity, the two of them suspect there is a strong connection between them which they can’t explain. Like in the first Matrix, at some point the protagonist must decide if he’ll take the blue or the red pill to wake up in a reality in which humans are harvested for energy while their minds are connected to the Matrix, living fictional lives in what seems to be the early 21st century. There are good moments in the movie but also some inconsistencies.

Land (2021), is directed and starred by Robin Wright. The whole movie revolves around a woman who is suffering after her husband and son die. She decides to turn her back to society and live in isolation, in a cabin in the middle of nowhere. She’s determined to survive on her own, but eventually the cold winter and the lack of food almost kill her. When she’s saved by a kind stranger, she slowly starts to rebuild emotional connections with other people. I really enjoyed the calmness and the dramatic tension of Land, and Robin Wright does a wonderful job both as the director and the protagonist.

May Films / películas de mayo

Five years ago I saw Prometheus, the prequel to Alien (1979), and I was impressed by Ridley Scott’s proposal. Of course, for the past years I’ve been eagerly awaiting the second part of the prequel and I must say Alien: Covenant (2017) certainly hit all the right spots for me. The British filmmaker starts by building up the suspense slowly but surely. The monstrosity and ferocity of the original alien are still present here, but this time there is also another unsettling element: the dark side of humanity and the cybernetic dementia of an android that considers himself to be a god, and who is responsible of genetically improving the already lethal alien. Michael Fassbender gives an outstanding performance as an android so human that turns out to be almost as scary as the alien the human crew is fighting against. The cast also includes Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup and Danny McBride. A must see for all sci-fi and/or horror fans!

Just like last month, October turned out to be a celebration of filmic diversity (and hopefully next year I’ll celebrate Halloween with a proper horror marathon). So let’s begin with The Martian (2015), based on Andy Weir's novel and directed by Ridley Scott, one of the most extraordinary sci-fi blockbusters of the year. Matt Damon (Liberace’s gay lover in Behind the Candelabra) is an astronaut stranded on Mars, and he must figure out how to survive until a rescue mission arrives. Focusing heavily on the science, this is the kind of fiction that feels absolutely realistic. It is an inspired homage to Nasa and to the greatest achievements of mankind, and a tale full of intensity, that portrays the struggle of one man against unsurmountable odds, thus highlighting the fascination we all feel for space travels and cutting-edge technology. I highly recommend this dramatic and fascinating odyssey.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on Philippe Petit's autobiographical book, The Walk (2015), is a deeply poignant and captivating chronicle of a man brave enough to defy heights and accomplish an impossible feat: walking on a wire on top of the highest buildings in the world in 1974: the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (famous for his role as a gay teenager in Mysterious Skin) is the charismatic protagonist, a funambulist so audacious that many would consider crazy. Zemeckis really hits a home run with this beautifully crafted story about the pursuit of a seemingly unrealizable dream. Impressive and touching, The Walk reminded me too well of that feeling of vertigo I myself experienced when I visited the WTC, 15 years ago. The cast includes Ben Kingsley (Gandhi), Charlotte Le Bon and César Domboy.

Dracula Untold (2014) was a failed attempt at resurrecting our love for the vampire subgenre. Luke Evans (The Hobbit: the Battle of the Five Armies) gives a convincing performance, but despite a few good moments (mostly at the beginning), this was a huge disappointment, poorly directed and full of plot holes.

I must say I was very satisfied with Steven Quale’s Into the Storm (2014). A man-versus-nature approach is strengthened by compelling characterization, good action sequences and some truly suspenseful moments. The cast includes young actors such as Max Deacon, Nathan Kress and Jeremy Sumpter.

Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are the directors, writers and protagonists of What We Do in the Shadows (2014), a superb and truly hilarious mockumentary about vampires living in today’s world. Black humor, irreverence and witty dialogs turn this into one of the best horror parodies I’ve seen in years. I couldn’t stop laughing from the opening scene until the end, and I just hope they make a sequel, it really is that good.

Co-written, co-produced, directed and starred by Matt Johnson and Owen Williams, The Dirties (2013) is one of the finest independent productions I’ve seen lately. The subject of bullying continues to be an open wound that not many know how to deal with. Fortunately, these young filmmakers completely understand what it feels like to be ostracized teenagers, fantasizing about revenge. The problem, however, is when fantasy starts seeping into reality, becoming the prelude of a school shooting. The ending is tremendously shocking and brutal.

Stanley Kubrick was a brilliant director, and Eyes Wide Shut (1999) was his last masterpiece. Tom Cruise (The Last Samurai) and Nicole Kidman (The Others) are happily married, but underneath the comfortable life they’ve forged for themselves, there are many hidden passions and secrets. Motivated by jealousy, the protagonist ends up exploring a sinister cult and witnesses their hedonistic activities and their depravity. However, his intervention does not go unnoticed. Kubrick creates a unique feel of paranoia and fear with the constant presence of ominous details. An excellent film that delves deep into the darkest corners of the human mind.

54 (1998), written and directed by Mark Christopher, is a thorough reconstruction of the party scene in New York, back in the psychedelia years. Ryan Phillippe (The Lincoln Lawyer) is a handsome bus boy that works in 54, the coolest club in the city, eventually he ends up prostituting himself to obtain money and favors, having sex with many men as well as women. An honest depiction of drug-addiction, alcoholism, broken dreams and corrupted youth. The cast includes Salma Hayek (Lonely Hearts), Breckin Meyer (Garfield), Mike Myers (Austin Powers) and Neve Campbell (Scream), and a Michael Pitt (Hannibal) cameo.

Based on real life events, Matias Lira’s El bosque de Karadima (2015) brings to light the case of one of Chile’s most popular priests, a well-connected religious figure who sexually abused countless of boys for decades. Pedro Campos (famous for his role in the gay-themed short film Blokes) is a naïve teenager, who is frequently fondled and even masturbated by the old man; however, the manipulative priest soon starts getting more sexually aggressive with his victim, and this situation goes on for years until the boy, now a traumatized adult, finally finds the courage to take his case to the court.

Bertrand Bonello’s Saint Laurent (2014) is a wonderful biopic about Yves Saint Laurent, one of France’s greatest fashion icons. Gaspard Ulliel (famous for his role as a gay boy in Paris, je t'aime) is fantastic as the fashion designer, aptly portraying the behavior of a gay young man who, despite his creativity, is also plagued by his addictions and neurotic obsessions. The cast includes very talented actors such as Jérémie Renier (mostly known for his role as a closeted gay boy in Les amants criminels), Louis Garrel (famous for his role as a bisexual young man in Les Chansons d’Amour), Brady Corbet (who achieved celebrity status after playing a sexually confused boy in Mysterious Skin), Helmut Berger (once again an old homosexual man, the same role he had in Blutsfreundschaft), Ernst Umhauer (famous for his role as a bisexual boy in the remarkable Dans la maison) and Léa Seydoux (famous for his lesbian role in La vie d'Adèle).

Also from France comes Little Gay Boy (2013), written and directed by Antony Hickling, an experimental project without a coherent narrative. Gaëtan Vettier, an attractive young man, is sexually abused by several men, in very surreal environments; there are many scenes of incest, fetishism, bondage and sadomasochism.

From Sweden comes Hannes Holm’s Himlen är oskyldigt blå (2010). Bill Skarsgård and Adam Pålsson (famous for his role as a gay teenager in Torka Aldrig Tårar Utan Handskar) are high school friends, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the summer vacations. However, while one of them enjoys the luxurious life-style of his wealthy family, the other one is desperate to get a job and earn enough money. That’s how this kid ends up in the hands of a sinister old man, who takes a special interest in the youngster. A superb coming of age tale that explores teenage sexuality as well as the Swedish criminal underworld.

my drawing (color version) / mi dibujo (versión a color)
