Happy # 3 - Grant Morrison & Darick Robertson

Does nostalgia betray our memories, coloring our past in warmer and happier tones? Perhaps sometimes that is the case, but one thing remains true when it comes down to Nick Sax: his terrible current situation would make his past, any past, seem like paradise in comparison.

In the penultimate chapter of Grant Morrison’s new creator-owned series, Nick tries to get out of the city. Happy, the blue winged horse that he initially considered a hallucination tries to convince him to save the life of a child named Hailey.

It’s interesting to observe that in the past, Nick had a good life and a loving wife. But after witnessing some of the most horrifying crimes in the city, his only way to deal with all that was by drinking. Then things got worse and worse, and finally his wife left him and he lost his badge. With nothing to lose, he starts working for a criminal group.
Nick's past / el pasado de Nick

Happy doesn’t accept that misery and decay is the norm, but after taking a quick look at how people act and talk during the Christmas season, he convinces himself that Nick is right: the world is a hopeless, shitty place. It seems, then, that without at least a modicum of happiness Happy can no longer manifest himself in our reality, and so he vanishes not without finally explaining to Nick what is his connection with Hailey.

In the final scenes, we see the depraved Santa Claus about to ‘open his gifts’, a group of kids tied up as Christmas presents. One of them is Hailey. She’s about to be raped by a Santa Claus who plans to act like the protagonist of a very perverted pornographic movie. Let’s remember that the term pornography originates from two Greek words, porne, which means harlot, and graphein, which means to write. In a way, the viewer is inscribed -written into the sexual situation he’s seeing- into the movie. The audience imagines how it would feel to be the man who’s penetrating the woman, but what does Hailey imagine in this situation? She fantasizes, of course, about freedom, about a fictitious creature that will magically save her: Happy. Santa Claus will reduce her to something not human; merely a body part, a body opening or an orifice, and she must hold on to her fantasies in order to remain sane. The white-bearded pederast derives sexual gratification from the degradation of children. Certainly, this third issue ends with a strong cliffhanger.

Nick killing again / Nick matando nuevamente

A very depraved Santa Claus / Un Papa Noel muy depravado
