Druuna: Delta - Serpieri

Many years ago, when I was still in school, I came across a woman of ravishing beauty: long black hair, athletic silhouette, generous curves and melancholic but captivating eyes. Her name was Druuna, and she existed only on paper; she was created by Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri, a great Italian artist and an expert in eroticism (and just as famous as Manara).

At that time, I had access to Zona 84, an emblematic Spanish publication that reunited the best European authors of the 80s. I remember there were two stories that captured my attention right away: one of them was “Burton & Cyb” by Ortiz and Segura, and the other one was Serpieri's Druuna. Both were among the few stories that came out in color (the rest was published in black and white), a special privilege granted only to comics with the most exquisite art.

Since I only had a handful of issues, I could only read the first 12 pages of the Delta saga. I didn't know how the story would end. So when I found out that Lo Scarabeo would reprint Druuna in a set of nice deluxe hardcovers, it was impossible to resist the temptation. And probably the same thing would happen to anyone familiar with the character or the author.

In “Morbus Gravis”, Druuna had to survive in a nightmarish world. A strange disease had turned men into monstrous creatures, and those who had survived this illness treated men and women with savagery and cruelty. In this insane scenario, Druuna is unarmed and naked, and that is the source of her strength; id est, her impressive beauty.
Druuna & Lewis (Earth) / Druuna & Lewis (la Tierra)
Some have found similarities between Druuna and Justine by the Marquis de Sade. The truth is that, as Serpieri explains, Druuna “at times has a masochistic behavior”. According to Serpieri, she is a “woman who suffers a series of mishaps... calamities... she does not want to go through that, but she must... sometimes these mishaps will give her pleasure”. To survive, Druuna is forced to have sex with all kinds of men, but even under the worst circumstances, she finds joy. A Lacanian jouissance that does not resemble the notion of pleasure conceived by Serpieri, and it is that jouissance which forces her to keep going.
Paradise lost / el paraíso perdido
Luis Antonio Bolaños de la Cruz, in a splendid article, affirmed that Druuna’s script was “strongly linked to galactic adventures with an overwhelming eroticism able to stimulate our eyes and mind [...] always preserving a sense of debauchery that would only increase in subsequent chapters of this peculiar space opera, brimming with action, ambiguity and decadence, spiced up with plenty of aberrations and explicit sex”.
the present / el presente
“Delta” was published in 1987, just two years after “Morbus Gravis”. But in that short time, Serpieri would refine his painting techniques even more, consolidating his favorite female archetype: “attractive and strong women, defined by a classic carnality, diametrically opposed to the squalid females that for decades had embodied the unsavory concept of stylized beauty imposed on us by the fashion industry”, explains Bolaños de la Cruz. Indeed, Druuna has nothing to do with the anorexic supermodels of the real world but with Serpieri's voluptuous imagination; once again the incredible power of fantasy can overshadow an insipid reality.

there is no law anymore / la ley ya no existe

Druuna and Schastar, her former lover / Druuna y Schastar, su antiguo amante
Relics from the past / reliquias del pasado
Druuna is captured and tortured / Druuna es apresada y torturada

The X-Men # 1 & 2 - Stan Lee & Jack Kirby

Life is movement, change and constant evolution, but fewer times does that become clearer than when we leave childhood behind to enter into the uncharted territory of adolescence. Change becomes something very tangible and impossible to hide, the body is altered, mutated so to speak, and so is the personality. Teenagers are suddenly ready to confront parental authority, to defy rules and to do the kind of irresponsible and immature things that we can find amusing only years later, after having learned a few lessons.
Jack Kirby
Stan Lee was well aware of this when he started writing the adventures of the X-Men “the most unusual teen-agers of all time”, and of course it was only fitting that evolution would play a major role in his proposal. The X-Men marked a departure from previous works, unlike the first Marvel superheroes, the X-Men weren’t the result of a scientific experiment or a fortuitous technological accident. They were born Homo Superior instead of mere Homo Sapiens (like the rest of us); extra powers and abilities were a part of their DNA and these usually manifested as they reached puberty.
Professor X (Charles Xavier)

That’s the reason why the X-Men need so desperately the guidance of Professor X, because they have all this incredible potential within them but they do not know how to develop it, and only Professor Charles Xavier can help them. Xavier’s mansion is the only school in the world that has only mutants as students, and the Professor’s ideology of humans and mutants coexisting peacefully is as noble as it is inspiring. In September 1963, the first issue of the X-Men hit the stands, and it revolutionized the comic industry, once again guaranteeing the success of Marvel Comics.  Stan Lee “emphasized strong characterization, crisp dialogue and breakneck pacing”, and all this can be observed in the pages of the X-Men’s debut.

In issue # 1, Jean Grey arrives to the school, becoming Professor X’s newest pupil. She is the only girl in this male-centric environment, and obviously the boys are very excited to meet her, all save Bobby Drake (AKA Iceman). As one might expect, these hot-blooded, hormones-driven teens immediately start lusting after the red-haired girl, but 16-year-old Iceman simply walks away from his friends, explaining that he doesn’t consider girls “a big deal”. Warren Worthington III (AKA Angel) doesn’t pay attention to Bobby and is simply happy to have one less competitor.

However, what is exactly going on in this particular scene? Why is Bobby the only one in the group not interested in girls at all? That was certainly the kind of question that could only be hinted at back in the 60s, but never fully answered. It would take decades until, in the hands of Brian Michael Bendis, Iceman would finally come out of the closet. This pivotal moment would take place in All-New X-Men #40 (April 2015), a surprisingly touching tale that reminds us that adolescents can have a hard time dealing with their feelings, and that understanding what they want or who they love, can be one of the hardest challenges ever. In the foreword of volume one of “Marvel Masterworks: The X-Men”, Stan Lee shares his opinion about Bobby Drake: “And then there was Iceman. I was really worried about how the readers would accept him”. In a world that fears and hates mutants, one can only imagine how difficult it was for Iceman to accept his true sexual orientation, risking even further discrimination.
Panel 1: all the boys are excited to meet Jean Grey, except Bobby Drake /

The X-Men were a wonderful metaphor of all the doubts and self-loathing one might experience at that age. They already had plenty of personal problems to deal with and if that wasn’t enough, their first adversary was Magneto, who took over a military base in order to deploy its nuclear arsenal. The master of magnetism proves to be a powerful enemy, and although the X-Men rescue the soldiers and reclaim the base, they cannot capture Magneto.

“No One Can Stop the Vanisher” (originally published in The X-Men # 2, November 1963) is the kind of fun and lighthearted adventure that was most typical in this era, but it also has a few interesting moments. When the X-Men are unable to defeat the Vanisher, an odd-looking mutant with the power of teleportation, Professor X enters into the arena and quickly subdues this foe with his mental powers. As a reader, and perhaps more importantly, as a fan, I’ve always said that Charles Xavier is the most powerful mutant on Earth, his telepathic powers make him invincible but that can be a problem in narrative terms. Because Xavier can easily act as a ‘Deus ex machina’, always saving his students in the proverbial nick of time.

The first issues were penciled by Jack ‘King’ Kirby and inked by Paul Reinman. Kirby’s covers are absolutely stunning, classic images that have inspired countless of artists in the past 50 years. With dynamic illustrations and very creative designs, Kirby “defined the super hero as never before – or since. This was the inimitable Marvel Style that set the tone, that became the standard by which all other comic art in America was judged”.

The second month of the year comes with plenty of surprises, so let’s start with a title you are all familiar with: The Revenant (2015) is an impressive, breathtakingly beautiful and yet savage exploration of life… perhaps like nature itself. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu recreates the struggles of fur traders in the 19th century; and in doing so he also sheds new lights on America’s past and the clash between cultures. The protagonist is an unrelenting man who, after barely surviving the attack of a grizzly bear, still fights for his survival. Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) excels in the leading role, and thanks to his compelling and absolutely haunting performance he finally won the Oscar as Best Actor (an award long time overdue). The strength of a fascinating script is also complemented by the magnificent work of an all-star cast: Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), Will Poulter (Son of Rambow) and Domhnall Gleeson (Unbroken). A surprising cinematographic achievement, with overwhelming intensity and frenetic pace. The Revenant is truly one of the best films of 2015.

Written and directed by Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini 10,000 Saints (2015) is a wonderful coming-of-age tale that coherently examines the relationship between fathers and sons, highlighting the self-destructive behavior of teens, as well as their complete lack of responsibility. Drug-addict and penniless Ethan Hawke abandoned his son, Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game); however, years later they meet again, under very dramatic circumstances. In 10,000 Saints reckless actions always have dangerous consequences, as Asa Butterfield discovers when he witnesses the death of his best friend. The cast includes Hailee Steinfeld and Emile Hirsch (Killer Joe).

I didn’t think I would laugh out loud so many times with Deadpool (2016), a most transgressive adventure that redefines the traditional boundaries of superhero blockbusters. Director Tim Miller really understands the essence of the Merc with a Mouth. I must also praise the clever use of parody and metafictional elements, the raunchy but always effective sense of humor, and the hilarious and rebellious tone of the movie. Ryan Reynolds (Woman In Gold) is the ideal actor to play Deadpool.

I always enjoy movies about alien invasions, and certainly The 5th Wave (2016) didn’t let me down. Earth’s invasion is described from the point of view of a brave girl: Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass), I especially liked the way we see how civilization crumbles so rapidly. Distrust and fear are constant elements, and no one takes for granted mankind’s survival. The cast includes young actors like Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer) and Alex Roe. Can’t wait to see the sequel.

White Bird in a Blizzard (2014), directed by Gregg Araki, delves deep into the secrets and tragedies of a seemingly normal middle-class family. Eva Green (Dark Shadows) is the disturbed and unbalanced mother, Christopher Meloni is the insecure father and Shailene Woodley (Divergent) is the rebellious daughter, who has fallen in love with Shiloh Fernandez, a handsome bisexual boy. Based on Laura Kasischke’s novel, this unusual film deals with sexual confusion, adultery and murder, and yet at the same it displays a unique tenderness, a sweet and warm feeling that reminds us of the ideal home, the one all the characters in the film are so desperately trying to find. There are some really heartbreaking moments and unforgettable scenes. This is why Araki has always been one of my favorite filmmakers. I totally recommend White Bird in a Blizzard.

Ava DuVernay’s Selma (2014) is a poignant and extraordinary chronicle about Martin Luther King (superbly played by David Oyelowo). The contrasts between racial discrimination and civil rights, between police brutality and Martin Luther King’s peaceful campaign are brilliant. The necessity for equal voting rights allows the filmmaker to analyze the political upheavals in the 60s. Martin Luther King’s intelligent and charismatic approach allowed him to ideologically unify a nation on the verge of social collapse.

Alfonso Gómez-Rejón directs The Town that Dreaded Sundown (2014), a remake of a popular 70s horror movie. Addison Timlin is investigating a series of mysterious murders in the town of Texarkana. But she might be closer to the serial killer than she thinks. There are some genuinely frightening scenes and a couple of unexpected plot twists. I hadn’t seen such a good horror production in months. The cast also includes Travis Tope and Spencer Treat Clark.

Ouija (2014) is an insipid production that does quite a disservice to the horror genre. There are good young actors here (like Olivia Cooke and Douglas Smith), but the script is rubbish.

Robert Redford is the lead actor and also the director of The Company You Keep (2012), a lucid take on political persecution and the cost of activism. Redford reminds us of the darker aspects of recent American history. The protagonist must escape from the FBI while trying to clean his name; meanwhile ambitious journalist Shia LaBeouf (Fury) is putting the pieces of the puzzle together. The cast includes many famous actors such as Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie, Nick Nolte, Brendan Gleeson, Stanley Tucci, Chris Cooper, etc.

Like Minds (2006), written and directed by Gregory Read, is a captivating psychological investigation. Two very peculiar teenagers, Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Tom Sturridge, slowly turn their private lives into a twisted game of tantalizing fetishism and depravity, becoming intimate friends in the process; and since they’re intellectually attracted to each other, their relationship eventually gets even more confusing. But problems begin when they forget the difference between their sophisticated and highly intellectualized fantasies and the real life. A series of murders have taken place in their elite high school, and Toni Collette (The Way Way Back) must find out who is the culprit. Like Minds is a remarkable and bloodcurdling cinematic thriller with astonishing acting. A must see.

Sometimes sequels are a disappointment, and Ghostbusters II (1989) wasn’t nearly as funny or as witty as its predecessor. At least Bill Murray (Lost in Translation), Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Sigourney Weaver are great in their roles.

From Denmark comes Søren Green’s En eftermiddag (2014), an honest portrait of everyday life and teenage awkwardness. Ulrik Windfeldt-Schmidt and Jacob Ottensten are two boys spending an afternoon together, and also discovering that their friendship can be transformed into something else. Subtle, moving and very realistic, this is an outstanding short film about the awakening of (homo)sexuality and the hardships of love.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Siempre disfruto viendo películas de invasiones alienígenas, y “The 5th Wave” (2016) no me defraudó. El reparto incluye a jóvenes actores como Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer) y Alex Roe.

my drawing / mi dibujo

ALL NEW ALL DIFFERENT AVENGERS #3

DC ESSENTIALS DC THE NEW FRONTIER #1

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1

MIRACLEMAN BY GAIMAN & BUCKINGHAM #6 (MR)

SECRET WARS #7 (of 8)
¡El sacrificio más grande!

SILVER SURFER #1

STAR WARS #7

https://www.comixology.com/Cronicas-Insolitas-1/digital-comic/334615
